Diagnosing diseases by looking at single cells and small clusters of cells is called cytology or cytopathology. It’s an important part of diagnosing some types of cancer. Cytological examinations are performed on body fluids (examples are blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid) or on material that is aspirated from the body. It's mainly used to diagnose or screen for cancer. It's also used to screen for fatal abnormalities, for pap smears, to diagnose infectious organisms, and in other screening and diagnostic areas.
